Thanks to your hard work, Friends, I'm pleased to report that the Senate has just approved the New START treaty, reducing the number of allowable nuclear warheads in the United States and Russia by thousands.
The result of your hard work
All Senate Democrats and 13 Republicans voted in favor of the treaty, which required 75% of the senators to be approved.
This included two Republicans we had specifically highlighted, Sen. Lamar Alexander of Tennessee and Sen. Mike Johanns of Nebraska, who voted for the treaty after previously opposing it. It's clear that your work and those of other anti-nuclear activists has paid off.

We know, of course, that this is only a beginning. It leaves in place more than 1,500 nuclear weapons. And given the level of opposition to even this modest nuclear arms reduction, pundits are speculating that President Obama's more ambitious goals to eliminate nuclear weapons may face a long struggle.

 Senators who voted for the treaty included all Senate Democrats, plus Republicans Lamar Alexander (TN), Bob Corker (TN), Robert Bennett (UT), Scott Brown (MA), Thad Cochran (MS), Susan Collins (ME), Olympia Snowe (ME), Judd Gregg (NH), Johnny Isakson (GA), Mike Johanns (NE), Richard Lugar (IN), Lisa Murkowski (AK) and George Voinovich (OH).
If one or both of your senators is among these, we encourage you to contact them and thank them for your vote.

While it's important to express your disapproval to senators who voted against New START, it's even more important to let backers of the nuclear reduction treaty know that they have your support.
We'll be fighting for more significant nuclear reduction legislation in the future, and encouraging President Obama to live up to his Nobel Peace Prize speech in which he said he will "seek a world without" nuclear weapons.
When a stronger nuclear reduction bill comes before the Senate, we'll need the support of those who voted for New START today.
Every nuclear weapon eliminated in our world is a step toward victory. While today's vote may only be a small step in that direction, with your help it will not be the last.
