Friends,

Rev. George HouserThis Wednesday, Oprah Winfrey will be devoting her show to honoring the members of the Freedom Rides, including the Rev. George Houser, Fellowship of Reconciliation member, former long-time FOR staffer, and co-founder of the Congress of Racial Equality.

Journey of Reconciliation, 1947With fellow FOR staffer Bayard Rustin, Rev. Houser founded the 1947 Journey of Reconciliation, a two-week interracial bus journey that was the model for the Freedom Rides that followed 14 years later, in 1961.

Check your local TV listings to see when Oprah airs for you, or visit Oprah's web page on the episode for clips posted after Wednesday.

George Houser, now 94, continues to remain active in struggles for justice and peace. He serves on the advisory board of the African Activist Archive Project, and maintains his criticism of the current U.S. wars in the Middle East, for which he was profiled by The New York Times in 2007.

Watch for a detailed article about Rev. Houser's life and work with the Fellowship of Reconciliation in the next issue of Fellowship -- subscribe now if you're not already receiving it.
