Dear Friends,
As a candidate, President Obama promised troops would begin to be withdrawn from Afghanistan in July 2011. In the next few weeks, the president will make decisions about how many troops to remove.
Now is the time for the president to hear from you: Exit Afghanistan!
Oregon Sen. Jeff Merkley is circulating a letter to other senators demanding a "sizeable and sustained" reduction in troop levels in Afghanistan beginning this July.
Sen. Merkley's letter can have a real impact on the president if it is signed by a significant number of senators -- and that's where you come in!
The Council for a Livable World is collecting messages to each senator, and will deliver them to help build support for Sen. Merkley's letter.
Join us as we urge senators and the president to bring our troops and our money home -- $10 billion per month -- and spend it on jobs in the United States and education in Afghanistan.
The U.S. war in Afghanistan is the longest in our history, surpassing even the Vietnam War. We must take this opportunity to begin the end of the war.
President Obama has said that the withdrawal will not be a "token gesture," but the Pentagon is pushing back hard, advocating withdrawing as few as 10,000 troops, with a large majority being office and clerical staff. Don't let this be a symbolic withdrawal -- contact your senators today!
And if you'd like to do even more, Veterans for Peace has information on contacting your representative about Afghanistan withdrawal bills in the House.
