Stop Hitting on Our Kids: Research on Military Recruitment
Wednesday, May 2, 2:00 pm Eastern Time
Student information is automatically released to military recruiters in school districts across the country, giving privileged access to those recruiters when young people are making decisions about their futures. But some communities have mobilized to prevent the military's penetration of schools and private information, locally and at the state level. Obtaining data about when, where, and how much military recruiters are targeting communities in our region makes it possible for national and local activists to focus our resources, mobilize targeted constituencies, and assess our efforts. How do you learn the information to make change in military recruitment in your community?

Pat Elder has researched the use of required military testing and opt-out techniques, with the National Coalition to Protect Student Privacy, successfully passing state laws to limit the military's access to private information. Sam Diener has used the Freedom of Information Act to obtain key information on military recruitment practices. In this webinar, Pat and Sam will help us learn the skills to push back on the military's targeting of young people in our communities.
This is the fifth webinar sponsored by Militarism Watch, a project of the Fellowship of Reconciliation to strengthen research skills on U.S. militarism to support activist campaigns. Check out Militarism Watch's online tools, including past webinars. |
