Fellowship of Reconciliation

Friends,

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

Gus Kaufman and Rep. John Lewis
Gus Kaufman, left, with civil rights pioneer and FOR member Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.).

This revision of the Exodus injunction/Hammurabi's code succinctly sums up why I support FOR. Doing to the other what they do to you is an early attempt at justice. In a way this is a natural impulse when we feel wronged, but is countered by empathy, a force equally natural.

"The inescapable network of mutuality" of which Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. speaks is a fundamental truth of our existence. Though we are born to compete and cooperate, in our world and our time, the science of the second path is sorely needed.

That science is for me what the Fellowship of Reconciliation aims to represent.

Join me in supporting FOR with your end of year, tax-deductible donation. New or increased donations of $100 or more will be doubled through 2012!

I grew up in middle Georgia, born in 1946. I remember segregation. I was taught it and taught to reject it. I was a Jew from a people and a family who knew justice and equality were essential to being human. Coming to terms over many years with being gay only reinforced this knowledge.

FOR has its share of struggles and human foolishness, but Flaubert said, "Human speech is like a cracked kettle on which we tap crude rhythms for bears to dance to, while we long to make music that will melt the stars."

I support our Fellowship for the music we strive to make. I hope you will too, with your donation.

Gus Kaufman, Jr.
Past Vice Chair, FOR National Council
Decatur, Georgia

P.S. In four days, FOR's matching donation offer will expire. Make a new or increased donation of $100 or more in the next four days and double your impact!
