Fellowship of Reconciliation

Friends,

Yesterday I was in Albany, NY, standing with other environmental activists in front of the capitol during Gov. Andrew Cuomo's State of the State address, calling on the governor to oppose hydro-fracking.

Next week, on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday, I'll be at the gates of the White House, once again seeking to carry out the Fellowship of Reconciliation's Statement of Purpose, which commits all FOR members to "Endeavor to show respect for personality and reverence for all creation." In DC, I will join other leaders of the Interfaith Moral Action on Climate, calling on President Obama to urgently address the climate crisis.

Add your voice to mine by endorsing the action.

Interested in joining me in Washington? Sign up for the interfaith pray-in at the White House.

Together, our interfaith coalition has declared, "We are especially concerned by the effects on local communities and our planetary future of destructive, extreme energy extraction: mountaintop removal, fracking, Arctic and deep sea offshore oil drilling and tar sands mining." Our statement continues:

"Out of our moral commitment to protect and heal God’s Creation, our religious communities need to be calling for a set of first-step changes that will sow the seeds of greater change, by committing the President and Congress to vigorous action. And we should pose those demands in such a way that we are addressing not only our government, but also religious communities throughout the country."

Our demands to the president include:

  1. Permanently refusing permits for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.
  2. Calling a national summit on the climate crisis.
  3. Publicly supporting a carbon fee, with provisions to ensure working families and the poor are not harmed.
  4. Ending subsidies to the coal, oil, and gas industries.
  5. Creating new subsidies for renewable, sustainable, and jobs-creating clean energy.

In the words of Rev. Dr. King, "This is a time to break the silence!"

Endorse the interfaith pray-in for the climate today.
