Fellowship of Reconciliation

Friends,

Imagine the scene:  1893, Chicago.  The World Columbian Exposition is going on—a forerunner of the World’s Fair.  Persons from all over the world are converging on the windy city and to take advantage of this fact, a number of smaller parliaments and congresses are set up.  One of these was the first Parliament of World Religions.  The gathering included Protestant, Catholic and Jewish representatives. Mary Baker Eddy founder of the new religion Christian Science was there, one American Muslim was present, as well as the Hindu monk Swami Vivekenanda.  Though there were few participants of eastern religions and no Sikhs, this gathering is thought to be the genesis of the modern interfaith movement.

Now, more than 100 years later, multifaith work is embraced as an essential part of a creating a harmonious world community, and the sixth Parliament of World Religions is about to take place.

I am on my way to Salt Lake City to gather with thousands from across the globe who desire to further interreligious understanding, cooperation and peacemaking. Joining me are FOR current and former National Council members Laurie Childers (Chair), Sahar Alsahlani (Vice Chair), Ciprian Iancu, Rabbi Gerry Serotta and FOR Freeman Fellow Rabbi Lynn Gottlieb. We’ll be sharing FOR’s century of expertise on the potentials for a vibrant and engaged interfaith community to contribute to the creation of the beloved community.

Learn more about the 2015 Parliament of World Religions and the amazing lineup of speakers and presenters - Nobel Peace Laureates, Religious Leaders, Global Thinkers, and interfaith activists - who are saying yes to reclaiming the heart of our humanity!

And if you'd like to be a part of the event from the comfort of your own home, you can watch the livestream here.

In peace and gratitude,

Rev. Kristin Gill Stoneking
