Fellowship of Reconciliation

Friends,

I'd like to invite you to join your fellow activists of all ages at the Fellowship of Reconciliation's 58th Annual Seabeck Conference -- and centennial celebration! -- "Persevering FOR Peace," July 1-4, in Seabeck, Washington.

FOR-USA, Oregon FOR and Western Washington FOR are jointly hosting a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Fellowship of Reconciliation in the United States.

Our conference will feature nationally known keynote speakers as well as numerous workshops for those interested in gathering to discuss current peace and justice concerns in our local communities, the nation, and the world.

2016 keynote speakers

Jamila Raqib: Executive director of the Albert Einstein Institution since 2005 and a research affiliate at the Center for International Studies at MIT. Among Jamila's many responsibilities as AEI's executive director are the coordination of publication agreements and speaking with domestic and international media about the importance of tools and resources on nonviolent struggle for social and political movements.

Jamila works closely with Dr. Gene Sharp, the world's foremost scholar on strategic nonviolent action, and, in 2009, collaborated with Dr. Sharp to create a new curriculum entitled Self-Liberation: A Guide to Strategic Planning for Action to End a Dictatorship or Other Oppression. Jamila is fluent in Pashto and has knowledge of Dari.

Watch Jamila's presentation to the 2014 Oslo Freedom Forum on the success of nonviolent struggle.

Erica Chenoweth: An internationally recognized authority on political violence and its alternatives. Her path-breaking research on the effectiveness of nonviolent resistance has earned her numerous distinctions for "proving Gandhi right." Foreign Policy ranked her among the Top 100 Global Thinkers of 2013.

In addition to being associate professor at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver and associate senior researcher at the Peace Research Institute of Oslo, Erica is author or editor of three books and dozens of scholarly articles. She is currently the co-chair of the academic advisory board at the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict and a term member at the Council on Foreign Relations.
